History
The English Department was started along with the establishment of the college in 1957. At first, English was taught as the first language for the one-year Pre-University Course. When degree courses in Economics and Mathematics were started in 1958, English began to be taught as Part I language at the degree level. The B.A. degree course in English language and literature was started in the year 1961-62. English was taught at the Pre-Degree level till the course was de linked in 2000.
The first Principal of the college late Prof. V.Gopalan Nair who retired as the Director of Collegiate Education was an English Professor who played a key role in setting up the Department. At that time Prof. P.K. Sheshadri was the first teacher to join the Department who later headed the Department for several years. Other eminent teachers, who include Prof. Madhukar Rao, Prof. K.Prabhakaran Nambiar, Prtof. A.Balakrishnan, Prof. K.K.Geevarghese, Prof. V.K.Moothathu, Dr. K.V. Thirumalesh, Dr. Achuthan, Prof. Shreeshadeva Poojithaya, Prof.Chapady Vasudeva and Prof. B. F. M. Abdul Rahiman.
The starting of the Post Graduate course in English Language and Literature marked an important phase in the development of the Department. The M.A. course was started in the year 1998. Application for recognising the Department as a research centre is under consideration of the Kannur University.
